Like any homeowner in Singapore, you would want the best for your home (as long as it is within your means). That likely includes your home flooring. However, with the numerous options available on the market, it can be challenging to select your ideal floors. With that in mind, it makes sense to check out the trending designs for inspiration. But where do you even begin to look? Fret not! Let us compile the top trends in one handy article.

Trend #1: Make a statement with bold colours and patterns

Make a statement with bold colours and patterns-vinyl tiles

2023 is all about making a statement with your flooring. From bold geometric patterns to vibrant colours, homeowners are moving towards more daring designs. So if you are feeling adventurous and want to add a pop of colour to your home, why not switch things up from neutral flooring?

Busy, bold patterns help create a sense of energy in your home. So opting for geometric shapes or floral designs can make your flooring stand out. Our Big Diamond or Big Hexagon collection from Studio Moods is an excellent choice for the design conscious among us. These vinyl tiles are perfect for adding personality to your home and creating a unique atmosphere.

Alternatively, you can consider terracotta as a surprising but welcome colour palette to add a rich, warm earthy tone to your home or our Botanic Concrete hybrid wood floors from Muse to incorporate a vibrant pattern to break up any neutral space.

Trend #2: Go for what works

Go for what works-wooden flooring

People often turn to what has worked before when they are in doubt. After all, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? So we expect wooden flooring to continue dominating in 2023. They are timeless and add a warm and natural feel to any room. So what’s not to like? In fact, wooden flooring is ideal for those who want to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere in their homes while adding a touch of natural beauty to their interior design.

Vinyl plank flooring is another option that has been around for a while that remains popular. Like wood, we expect vinyl trends to continue, especially as we continue to see more innovative vinyl flooring designs and finishes. Besides, they are an excellent option for those who want the look of hardwood floors without the cost, as they are affordable and easy to install.

Trend #3: Vintage is in

Vintage is in-laminate flooring

Everything old is new again in 2023! After a few years spent hunkering down at home, many homeowners are nostalgic for the comfort of vintage home décor. Repurposing these elements into contemporary homes is all the rage, with repurposed furniture and antiques seamlessly integrated into redesigned spaces that feel thoughtfully curated and gathered over time.

This movement is definitely reflected in the flooring trends, as natural stones, from marble to granite, are more popular than ever, thanks to their timeless and elegant appeal. This type of flooring is perfect for those chasing a classic look that will never go out of style. The rustic look of embossed dark stain laminate flooring and hickory hardwood floors are also excellent choices to elevate your room while staying on trend.

Trend #4: Pattern play

Pattern play

If there is a pattern to the 2023 flooring trends, it is a fact that floors with patterns will flourish. While patterned flooring is not new – it is often used to increase visual interest in a home’s high-traffic spots – it has been recently seen taking over more formal spaces like the living rooms and dining areas.

You can consider Terrazzo floors, as they are highly customisable and come in a variety of colours and patterns, which is perfect for those who want a unique and eye-catching flooring option. This type of flooring also complements pretty much any interior design style. So we expect Terrazzo to be a hit with many homeowners.

Vinyl tiles and wooden flooring in patterns like herringbone and chevron are also increasingly popular, as they provide a fascinating contrast to existing or new flooring choices. Regardless of your decision, mixing and matching your flooring patterns can help add character and visual interest to your home.

This list is by no means exhausting. Nevertheless, it should give you plenty to consider as you go about choosing the ideal flooring option that complements your décor and lifestyle. With so many exciting trends available, it is time to start planning your flooring upgrade for your home renovation if you have not done so already.

Are you looking for stylish flooring that is also durable, economical, and customisable? In that case, you might have received recommendations to consider vinyl or laminate flooring. However, between the two choices, which is more suited for your home? If you remain undecided, fret not! Let us share the significant differences between the two options to help you make an informed decision.

1. Appearance and design

It is easy to confuse laminate and vinyl floors since they are comparably similar in appearance. However, laminate flooring has an uncanny resemblance to natural materials like hand-scraped hardwood, ceramic, and stone. Its thick top layer allows for deep, realistic three-dimensional embossing on its surfaces, replicating the look of the natural material being portrayed.

While vinyl floors can be designed to look like hardwood, stone, or tile, they are not renowned for their realistic looks. But thanks to the evolution of flooring technology, more varied and naturalistic visual designs are now possible for vinyl flooring, with luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) being the most realistic of the bunch.

2. Costs

Vinyl and laminate flooring usually feature similar price points and are less expensive than other materials like marble, porcelain, or hardwood. Nevertheless, the prices of these flooring solutions will differ according to the flooring consultants you visit. We recommend getting quotations from various flooring firms to make a price comparison.

3. Water resistance

It is a no-contest between vinyl or laminate flooring if you seek flooring for a dry toilet or damp location, such as the kitchen. Vinyl flooring is the standout option, as it is more water-resistant than laminate. In fact, newer iterations of vinyl flooring are made of 100% waterproof synthetic materials.

Conversely, laminate flooring usually uses a fibreboard core, which softens and swells when exposed to water. Even after the fibreboard core is dried, it will not revert back to its original dimensions. Additionally, the design layers may peel away when it becomes waterlogged.

Fortunately, such kinks have since been ironed out as technology has progressed. Now, our next generation of laminate flooring (Hybrid Wood from Quick-Step) boasts a 100% waterproof surface – the first of its kind in the market. As such, it is also an ideal choice for areas with a constant presence of moisture, like kitchens and powder rooms. With that said, we would still recommend going with vinyl for dry toilets instead of laminate.

4. Durability and longevity

Rest assured that vinyl and laminate flooring are durable and boast excellent longevity. Generally, the life expectancy of the flooring will depend on the traffic it receives over time, the quality of the material, and whether it was installed correctly. With that said, if you are looking for something more long-lasting, we recommend choosing vinyl flooring.

Most modern vinyl floors are resilient to everyday wear and tear. As such, they are more suitable for high-traffic areas and homes with kids or pets. And because vinyl flooring is waterproof, it can be exposed to water without any issues. But please note that lower-quality vinyl may peel or delaminate over time. Therefore, you should consider choosing high-quality vinyl with a strong protective layer, which will last longer.

In contrast, while laminate flooring is a robust and durable option, it can be damaged by prolonged exposure to moisture. Therefore, we always recommend homeowners clean any spills that occur as soon as possible. Moreover, most laminate floorings cannot be sanded or refinished when they succumb to water damage or become heavily scratched. Instead, they have to be replaced wholesale.

Fortunately, that is not the case with our laminate floorings. You only need to substitute the damaged planks rather than replace the entire flooring wholesale. Moreover, our laminate floors possess Scratch Guard and Stain Guard features, making them more resilient to scratches and stains.

5. Cleaning and maintenance

When deciding on your flooring, you will likely want one that is easy to clean and maintain, especially if you have pets or kids at home. In that case, both vinyl and laminate are excellent options. Both can be easily maintained with a regular vacuum and mopping routine. However, please avoid using a steam mop to clean vinyl floors, as the heat can damage the flooring.

Meanwhile, you can still mop laminate flooring regularly, but special care must be taken. Ensure you are using a damp mop that is almost dry to the touch so the moisture evaporates within a few minutes. If any spill occurs, clean it up immediately to prevent the liquid from seeping into the floor and damaging the flooring.

6. Ease of installation

Both laminate and vinyl floors are relatively straightforward to install and can be placed over existing flooring and most types of subfloors. However, when installing laminate flooring, you must ensure the subfloor is smooth and level before installation to properly support your flooring.

If you try to install laminate on a subfloor that is sloped or bumpy, the lock of the laminate could end up breaking or cracking due to the material’s hard and inflexible surface. Conversely, you can save significant time and cost during installation if your subfloor is even and secure.

As for vinyl floors, they have a broader range of installation methods available. In addition to the click-and-lock method, which is also used in laminate installations, there is also the glue-down method, loose-lay method, and peel-and-stick method. Each process varies in difficulty, so we recommend hiring a professional contractor to oversee your flooring installation.

Are you seeking a flooring contractor in Singapore to restore an existing floor in disrepair or fit a new laminate flooring in your home? However, how do you even begin looking, given the plethora of flooring services available on the market? Well, fret not because we are here to help simplify your search process. With our tips in mind, you are bound to identify the right flooring contractor that meets all your requirements.

Tip #1: Enquire about the contractor’s experience

Floor installations require precision to achieve the best results. And only an experienced flooring contractor will understand and be aware of the common challenges that could crop out during the installation work. When an issue arises, they will be in the best position to address your flooring concerns, ensuring the work produced is impeccable and on schedule.

An experienced contractor will have worked on multiple projects and have a portfolio showcasing their work. This portfolio can provide references for their work, allowing you to get a glimpse of their craftsmanship and ensuring the scope of their work meets your requirements and expectations.

Tip #2: Inspect the contractor’s accreditations

Just as you would hire an accredited plumber to service the pipes or a certified electrician to maintain an electrical circuit, you would want a licensed flooring contractor to install your flooring. The accreditations certify that the contractor meets specific standards and is recognised for their quality of work. They can also be held accountable if anything goes wrong during the installation process.

Tip #3: Read online reviews and ask for referrals

Read online reviews and ask for referrals-Flooring contractor Singapore

How does one purchase the correct product or hire the right service provider? With the advent of the internet, all the information you need is one click away. Perusing online reviews and ratings of your shortlisted flooring contractors can give you an idea of what others think about their services and whether they are satisfied with the work provided.

Additionally, you may consider asking for referrals from friends or family who recently had their home flooring done. Referrals are another excellent way to get an honest opinion about the contractor’s craftsmanship and customer service. You can also ask relevant follow-up questions if necessary, which is impossible with online reviews.

Tip #4: Check the contractor’s flooring options

You would probably have an ideal flooring option in mind for your dream home. Therefore, it makes sense to work with a flooring contractor who can provide a comprehensive range of flooring options that meet your needs and preferences. Even if you do not have an idea in mind, a reliable and experienced contractor will possess the expertise and knowledge to provide valuable insight and recommend the best flooring options that match your overall home design.
